A Food History Lesson - Know what you Eat

When we look through history books and films never do we see fat Cavemen or women, nor Vikings or Saxons, come to that Lancelot and William Wallis were all fine figures of men.  The only blip on this muscle bound histroy is of course Henry Tudor or better known as Henry VIII, but he was physically fit and healthy when young, only did gluttony set in as the years went on.

Right up to after the Second World War people seemed  to keep their shapes and obesity was a very obscure word.  Yes, there had been, famines, plagues and wars, and food in general had been very scarce at times.  This however is not the key! The reason that obesity has exploded globally is manufacturing, mass market and mass production.

The additives, preservatives, colourants, E numbers, emolsifiers and enhancers that are added to our foods are what has caused the root of the problem.  There are two main reasons WHY!
1.  All of these man made chemicals are foreign to our bodies and is like trying to biodegrade a plastic bag internally, we have not evolved to be able to do that as humans.  That is why there are so many intolerances, allegies and side effects to many of the added chemicals.  Which also have a knock on effect to so many other medical conditions such as migrines, IBS, ADHD, etc.
2.  The man made additives also have additional effects within our bodies, sending messages to our nervous system and brain, messages that over ride the natural triggers to say when the stomach is full or to create  addictive cravings for certain foods.

Convenience and Diet foods are not good for you no matter what you read on the lables, keep it simple, know what you have on your plate and exactly what is going into your body.  That way you stay in control and so can your body.  There is no magic cure, but there are loads of ways you can help your body to work at an optimum.

In the next Blog I am going to look at simple exercise to enhance fat burning.

Happy eating
